Last year I create a new playlist to pump me up for the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, so I thought it would only be fitting to create a new one for this year’s HALF MARATHON. A study published in 2010 discovered a direct correlation between fast-paced music and athletic performance. Apparently, the speed of the music (measured by bpm) influences the pace that you run. For instance, if you run a 5:38/km or a 9:00/mile (my goal pace for the half marathon) you should listen to songs that are 160 bpm such as Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” and so forth.
Tip: Running at half rate also works well. For example, 80 bpm can be used for 8 min/mile. You just run double pacing.
Now I only half believe this because c’mon, there is no music that is fast enough to make me run a 4 min mile no matter how hard I wish for that to happen! But I’m totally a music person and I cannot run without it so I did what any sane runner does while tapering… I made myself a new AWESOME marathon playlist and now I’m going to make you suffer through reading the entire 26 song, 122 minute list….
